Running CoD2 version 1.0 and version 1.3

From Call of Duty 2

Jump to: navigation, search

This is much easier than most sites I've seen make it. This is a way to run both the 1.0 version and the updated 1.3 version with Punkbuster. What is the big deal you ask? Well this does it with out using a Patch Switcher. You can tell which version you are running by looking in the bottom right corner at the start up screen.

Copying

{NOTE: This is assuming you already have updated to the 1.3 version. Please do so if you have not.}

Copy: Make a copy of the Activision folder. Go to C:\Program Files. Right click the Activision folder. Select copy. Right click on a blank part of the screen. Select paste.

Rename: The new copy of Activision to CoD2v1.3. !!!Make sure that it is the new copy!!!

Make Shortcuts: Open folder CoD2v1.3 then open folder Call of Duty 2. There should be 2 icons of stars with a 2 in the bottom right corner. One named CoD2MP_s and CoD2SP_s. These are the shortcuts you will copy. Right click CoD2MP_s select copy. Left click and hTake that copy and place it on your desktop.

Traditional Method

If you can actually get the above method to work, use that. Here's the method that most of the rest of us have to use -smug. These instructions are courtesy of the chickenscoup.com, thanks. http://chickenscoup.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=19&Itemid=9

Manual Copy and Setup

What many of our clan members have found to work is a simple process of doing a few copy/paste clicks, updating a couple shortcuts, and that's it, you have both versions 1.0 and 1.3 installed and available on your machine in their own directories. Works great for us as it is nice to have both versions in their own directory and desktop icons to start each version. The only real disadvantage is that if you put a custom map in one version, you have to put it in the other version too (or re-download it), but I have not found that to be much of a problem as I didn't frequent very many 1.0 servers due to the slow download speeds.

I have typed up a set of steps to follow to do this process. It seems like a long list of things to do, but in reality, is very simple. The instructions are detailed for those individuals that may not be very familiar with the copy/paste process. SO here are the instructions:

This setup assumes you have a working COD2 version 1.0 (or 1.01) installed to the default folder. In this setup, we will ultimately have version 1.0 running in its own folder "call of duty 2 1.0", and 1.3 running in the native "call of duty 2" folder. This way, any future patches for 1.3 or greater can use installation defaults and should not mess up the 1.0 version.

1) Create copies of desktop icons for single player and multiplayer game. These desktop icons will determine which version you are running.

  • right click on the Call of Duty 2(R) Single Player icon, left click on copy
  • right click on the desktop and left click on paste. this should create a copy of the single player icon
  • right click on the Call of Duty 2(R) Multiplayer icon, left click on copy
  • right click on the desktop and left click paste. This shoudl create a copy of the multiplayer icon

2) Make a folder for COD2 1.0

  • Using windows explorer, go to C:\program files\activision\ folder.
  • right click on "call of duty 2" and select "copy"
  • right click on blank area in activision folder and select "paste". This will create a folder called "copy of call of duty 2"
  • right click on "copy of call of duty 2" folder and select rename. Rename this folder to "call of duty 2 1.0"
  • this folder, "call of duty 2 1.0", will be the folder from which we run version 1.0

3) Update icons for version 1.0

  • for the single and multiplayer icons you copied in step 1, we need to set them up to point to the 1.0 folder. Make the following change ONLY to the copies we made, not the originals.
  • right click on the icon, select properties
  • for multiplayer icon, change settings as follows
  • change target path to be "C:\Program Files\Activision\Call of Duty 2 1.0\CoD2MP_s.exe"
  • change startin path to be "C:\Program Files\Activision\Call of Duty 2 1.0\"
  • click apply
  • click "change icon" button, change path to %ProgramFiles%\Activision\Call of Duty 2 1.0\CoD2MP_s.exe
  • save all these changes, then right click on the icon, select "rename", and rename the icon Call of Duty(R) 2 1.0 Multiplayer
  • for single player icon, change settings as follows:
  • change target path to be "C:\Program Files\Activision\Call of Duty 2 1.0\CoD2SP_s.exe"[
  • change startin path to be "C:\Program Files\Activision\Call of Duty 2 1.0\"
  • click apply
  • click "change icon" button, change path to %ProgramFiles%\Activision\Call of Duty 2 1.0\CoD2SP_s.exe
  • save all these changes, then right click on the icon, select "rename", and rename the icon Call of Duty(R) 2 1.0 Single Player

4) Install the 1.3 update

5) Test your icons

  • for the 1.0 icon, when you run it, you should see version 1.0 (or 1.01) in the bottom right
  • for the 1.3 icon, when you run it, you should see version 1.3 in the bottom right

In the 1.3 version, click on "filter servers" and make sure you change "Pure Servers Only" to NO

This seems like a lot to do, may seem complicated, but it actually is pretty easy. Way faster than trying to create an additional install from CDs. I would like to see if anyone tries this procedure, how it works for them.
